As a certified car nut, John McCully has been involved with cars his whole life. He spent four years competing on the Canadian go-kart racing circuit and was co-driver to the then reigning international champion in a number of endurance events He also served as the president of the local racing organizing body.
In 1990 when the CART Indy Car series announced it was going to host a race in Vancouver, a resident of the city at that time, McCully became involved in the event with two separate roles.
He trained and served as a first response emergency turn worker and became part of an effort to field a Vancouver native into the inaugural race. It grew into a huge grass routes effort called The Spirit of Vancouver IndyCar Racing Team.
After successfully entering the 1990 Vancouver race, Spirit of Vancouver Racing was able to run a limited schedule of races for the next three years. Driver, Ross Bentley, went on to win the 1998 GT3 United States Road Racing Championship and the 2003 SRPII Class Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona.
When the Red Bull Driver Search was announced in 2002 McCully was asked to put together a marketing package to make young driver, Dominique Claessens, stand out from the crowd of applicants.
The promotional package included; a logo, a website, a brochure outlining the driver’s abilities and a video interview hosted by well known F1 broadcaster and principle narrator of the Ayrton Senna documentary, John Bisignano.
After being chosen to participate, Dominique won with the fastest lap times in all rounds of the competition, securing a fully sponsored season in the European Formula Renault series with the Red Bull factory team.
The next year McCully arranged professional representation for Dominique with a top tier Los Angeles-based sports agent. John also wrote, produced and directed another video, again hosted by John Bisignano, about Dominique and the European Formula Renault series. The video, along with a printed promotional package, was used for soliciting sponsorship.
McCully is past president of the Mercedes Benz Club of America Long Beach-South Bay chapter. He is an avid fan of Formula 1 racing and can often be found in his garage tinkering with an automotive restoration project.
